Visit to Essex Provincial Priory
Thursday 14th May saw members of Northampton, Huntingdon and Bedford Knights Templar make the journey to Essex Provincial Priory for its Annual Provincial Priory meeting at Saxon Hall.
The journey from Northamptonshire to Southend-on-Sea is no short undertaking at the best of times, and the early morning traffic did little to make matters easier. As the contingent headed southeast, dark clouds gathered in the eastern sky, adding a suitably dramatic backdrop to the expedition. Progress along the M25 motorway and A127 road was slow, but despite the delays, the party arrived with around half an hour to spare before proceedings commenced.
Upon arrival at Saxon Hall, the scale of the occasion was immediately evident. Although the car park is sizeable, it was almost completely full, with only a handful of spaces remaining. This reflected the impressive attendance, with many Knights already assembled in regalia, engaged in warm conversation and renewing old friendships before the formalities began.
By 11am, the Temple was filled and all were seated in anticipation of the arrival of distinguished guests and visitors. The Provincial Prior, Roger Langdon Smith, entered in procession beneath the traditional Arch of Steel formed by the Essex Bodyguard, creating a striking and memorable opening to the meeting. He then opened the proceedings in due and ancient form, extending a warm welcome to all present.
A particularly pleasing moment came when special mention was made of the visitors from Northampton, Huntingdon and Bedford Knights Templar. The Provincial Prior noted the strength of the delegation, humorously describing it as a “Bodyguard Raid,” a remark which was received with good humour by all present. He also spoke highly of the Silent Drill display performed by the NHBKT Bodyguard at their own Annual Provincial Priory, praising the precision and discipline shown — recognition that was greatly appreciated by those who took part.
The business of the day followed the Summons in full and was conducted with efficiency and dignity. As the meeting drew toward its conclusion, the Essex Bodyguard presented their own Silent Drill display under the command of E.Kt. Peter Dawson. Their performance was polished and impressive, particularly given that several of the members taking part were relatively new to the team. Their confidence and coordination were a credit to the unit and drew well-deserved admiration from those watching.
Before closing the Chapter of Provincial Priory, the Provincial Prior delivered an enthusiastic and inspiring address, sharing his vision for the future of the Province and outlining a number of exciting plans in the months and years ahead. His words were received with clear interest and optimism.
The formal proceedings were followed by a convivial Festive Board, where excellent victuals were enjoyed by all. The opportunity for fellowship after the meeting was greatly appreciated, and the day concluded in the true spirit of the Order, with the Provincial Prior bidding all present a warm and fraternal farewell in the Bonds of the Order.
